1️⃣ Why Dynamic Memory?
In C, when you declare an array or variable, its size must be known at compile time:
int numbers[100]; // Fixed size
But what if:
- You don’t know the size in advance (e.g., user input)?
- You want to allocate memory at runtime?
👉 Dynamic memory allocation solves this problem.
2️⃣ Key Functions
Function | What It Does |
---|---|
malloc | Allocates a block of memory (uninitialized). |
calloc | Allocates and also initializes the block to zero. |
free | Frees the previously allocated memory to avoid memory leaks. |
All these functions are in the stdlib.h
library.
3️⃣ malloc
– Memory Allocation

4️⃣ calloc
– Contiguous Allocation
Syntax:
ptr = (castType *) calloc(number_of_elements, size_of_each_element);

– Deallocating Memory
Always use free()
to release memory allocated by malloc

Failing to do so causes a memory leak.

, the pointer becomes dangling (it points to a memory you no longer own). Best practice is:
